Conference connects research to public policy

Both the MU and Columbia communities welcomed participants at the Fourth Annual Cambio de Colores Conference, an event sponsored by the MU Cambio Center. UM System President Elson Floyd, MU Chancellor Brady Deaton, and Columbia Mayor Darwin Hindman each delivered brief welcome addresses at various points during the conference and offered words of support for the need for research and effective public policy that addresses the growing number of Latino residents in Missouri. Representatives from the recently reactivated MO Governor's Commission on Hispanic Affairs were also available to offer brief presentations highlighting the scope and function of the Commission.
Members of the local media were present to cover various aspects of the conference.

Forum sparks dialogue on global issues

MU Chancellor Brady Deaton discusses global issues at Chancellor's forum. |
Moderating the second discussion in a series of forums, Chancellor Brady Deaton hosted MU Chancellor Emeritus Richard Wallace, former MU professor and Interim Chancellor Mel George, and former UM System Executive Vice President Ron Turner, in an open dialogue held among MU faculty, staff, and students on the importance of higher education in local, state, and global issues.

International honoree shares personal side of student services

Jill Hermsen's passion for education and international travel has taken her all over the world, but the Midwest still feels like home for this MU Ph.D. student. After arriving at the University of Missouri-Columbia only two and a half years ago, Hermsen has already received national recognition as an emerging leader in the field of international education.

MU hosts intercultural exchange

Throughout March and April, MU will host nursing students from both Canada and Mexico as part of a "Cultural Expeditions in Nursing" course that allows students to participate in a North American cultural exchange designed to help future nurses gain an intercultural perspective on healthcare.

Pulitzer Prize winning journalist discusses Chinese movement
Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, Ian Johnson, delivered a compelling lecture on the struggle between the Chinese government and the spiritual movement of Falun Gong. The event was sponsored by the MU Department of Religious Studies, the School of Journalism, the Asian Affairs Center and the Center for Religion, the Professions and the Public.

MU help-center eases tsunami trauma
The MU International Center for Psychosocial Trauma recognizes that helping tsunami victims rebuild their lives must go beyond providing food and shelter. For Arshad Husein, director of the center, providing ongoing psychosocial assistance to victims is critical.

As part of a series of events organized in conjunction with Islam Awareness Week, the Muslim Student Organization sponsored Islamic Culture Night in an effort to raise fellow students' awareness of Islamic culture and hopefully counter some commonly held misconceptions.

Iraqi journalists connect with J-school via satellite
MU journalism students discussed freedom of the press with Iraqi journalists through satellite video feeds and listened as Iraqi and Jordanian newspaper journalists relayed stories of the harsh realities of wartime reporting.

Mizzou '39 Outstanding Mentor
The MU Alumni Association recently recognized Dr. Sarah C. Weaver, Director of Disability Services, in an open letter of appreciation for being an outstanding mentor and an inspiration to a Mizzou '39 Award Program applicant. Mizzou'39 is a program created in the spirit of service modeled by the founding families that made possible the 1839 founding of the University of Missouri.
Esperanza Award Recognition
Congratulations to Domingo Martinez, Coordinator for the MU Cambio Center, on his recent acceptance of the Esperanza Award, an award granted to "those who have made a difference, have given time, effort, and hope to many Hispanics in the state of Missouri." The award was bestowed on behalf of the Hispanic Leaders Group of Greater St. Louis at their Fifth Annual Scholarship Banquet held in early March.

Funding for Internationalizing MU Curriculum
As part of an ongoing effort to internationalize the curriculum at MU, the Council on the International Initiatives is offering up to ten (10) $1000 stipends for faculty with continuing appointments to help develop a new international course or significantly revise an existing course. Application deadline is Tuesday, April 19.

Study Abroad Opportunity
State Department sponsored study abroad programs remain open to undergraduates attending MU or any NASULGC institution. Applicants must be eligible for Pell grants.
Programs include all expenses paid seminars in either India (July 1-21) or Tunisia (June 12-July).
Application deadline is April 15.

Dear Reader,
Not a day goes by that I don't consider myself lucky to encounter so many extraordinary individuals that help make our university exceptional. Yet, among students, scholars, authors, athletes, dignitaries, and others, this month it was Silvia Martinez who captivated my attention most. You will find her story listed. She is not a teacher or a student. She is not rich or famous. She holds no advanced degrees and in fact speaks very little English, yet somehow her contributions are undeniably felt from every corner of our campus, our state, and perhaps even our country. By day her humble occupation is to clean Cramer Residence Hall, but with her hard work and infinite sense of hope, she dreams of sending her children to the colleges she did not have the opportunity to attend. Her story is a familiar American tale that tells of today's toils and trust for tomorrow's triumphs.
Sandra Day O'Conner once said, "We don't accomplish anything in this world alone. Whatever happens is the result of the whole tapestry of one's life and all the weavings of the individual threads from one to another that creates something."
Silvia comes to us from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, and the weavings of her "individual thread" to our university tapestry helps to "create something" undeniably significant. In fact, earlier this month government officials, university leaders, and representatives from community organizations across the state gathered to discuss Silvia's story, and many others like it, at the "Cambio de Colores" conference. Silvia may not be a part of any formal international program on behalf of MU, but she finds herself inadvertently a part of America's "international program."
Perhaps this month it is worthwhile to remember both how deeply our work affects the lives of others and how deeply their work makes possible our own.
